Health Benefits of Springfield Dirt!

Most Springfield parents know about the health benefits of gardening as a family: spending time outdoors, working together, establishing a connection to the food we eat, better nutrition, and many more.

Something not so well known in Springfield is that the dirt itself contains beneficial bacteria that can aid in depression, cognitive functioning, and even in fighting some cancers.

Working with soil in Springfield – digging, pulling weeds, harvesting vegetables – exposes Massachusetts kids and parents to a strain of bacteria called mycobacterium vaccae. Recent research reveals that m. vaccae triggers the release of seratonin, which can elevate mood and reduce stress.

In one study, two groups of mice were fed peanut butter sandwiches before finding their way through a difficult maze. One of the groups had m. vaccae spread on the sandwiches. The mice that ingested the bacteria ran the maze twice as fast and exhibited half as many stress behaviors as the mice that didn’t have the bacteria.

Think of Springfield kids in the ‘good ole’ days,’ running around on unpaved roads, playing in meadows, forests, and dirt piles, and half of the time probably bare-foot. It is quite a different childhood than the sanitized version that exists in our society today. Children not only need more time out-of-doors, but they need to get dirty! Let your Springfield neighbors hear you yell: ‘Kids, go outside and get dirty!’

Holyoke, Ludlow, and Westfield parents may do themselves and their children a favor by adding to their kids’ emotional, physical, and intellectual health by letting them play in the dirt!

Ludlow Home Offices: Small Is Beautiful Years ago, I remember hearing about an entrepreneur who ran a multi-million dollar construction company from her studio apartment, using a small closet as an office. Of course this was only the administrative headquarters, the heavy equipment was kept elsewhere.

I was impressed by this thrifty home business owner who said she had no plans to rent space and increase her operating costs as her company grew: she loved her little closet office and made it work.

My fellow Xocai Xe home based business owners enjoy the benefits of operating their own business from their Wilbraham home: unlimited income potential, flexibility, and being their own boss. Some new team members recruited from the corporate world are initially skeptical about being able to run their business from a small home or apartment. Today’s article is about working in a small home office.

Think of yourself as an astronaut in a cockpit with all the controls at your fingertips. How is a cockpit organized? There are buttons and switches on every level, but all accessible.

  • Get a desk that fits your space. Corner desks can free up space not ordinarily used.
  • Office chairs with rollers let you easily access items within arm’s reach without having to stand up.
  • Shelves, shelves, shelves! Use all that prime vertical real estate on your walls.
  • Get a paper shredder and use it.

Homemade Heat Pack For Wilbraham Kids

Wilbraham parents are great at helping their children stay healthy and safe. Today on the Springfield Children’s Health Blog, we wanted to give parents another way to help their kids: homemade heat packs. These easy-to-make heat packs are great for growing pains, sore muscles, or just some extra coziness at bedtime.

To start, simply go to any fabric store in the Holyoke, Ludlow, or Westfield area and choose some fabric (actually, you could even use an old t-shirt, fabric scraps, or a sock you have lying around). Cut two layers of the fabric one inch bigger than the desired size of the heat pack you would like for your child. A long rectangular shape is usually best.

Next, starting with one of the long sides, sew along the edges making sure to leave room for the seam allowance. Leave one short end open and fill the bag 2/3 full of rice. You can add a few drops of essential oil or herbs (these can be found at most Springfield natural food stores) to give the heat pack a pleasant odor for your child. Tie the bag off at the open end with some cotton string, or stitch it shut, and you’re done!

When your ready to use it, be safe by only heating it in the microwave for one minute. Check to see if it’s warm enough, then add time in short increments from there. If your kids prefer a cold pack in the summer, these bags can go in the freezer to chill for a spell.

If you want to get extra fancy, any Holyoke, Ludlow, or Westfield fabric store would have interesting trimmings to add. But remember to avoid ribbons that have metal wire in them.

Homemade Activities For Springfield Kids

It shouldn’t cost a fortune to get your Springfield kids fun, educational toys. Here at the Springfield Children’s Health Blog we want to provide parents with some ideas to keep their young children’s minds healthy. This homemade activity for toddlers uses an egg carton and encourages development of fine motor skills.

You’ll need:
Empty egg carton
Plastic Easter eggs, in assorted colors
Card stock, or other heavy paper
Markers
Puff balls, in assorted colors

Many of these supplies are probably already in your Wilbraham area homes. For the rest, they can easily be found at any Holyoke, Ludlow, or Westfield dollar store.

Wilbraham parents can take the card stock, cut it into cards, and draw an egg shape on each card. Then color each egg in a different color-combination. Have your kids draw a card, and when they see they color combination, they’ll take the plastic eggs from the carton and assemble the same combination from the eggs.

Your Springfield children will have fun while keeping their minds active and healthy as they practice learning their colors and copying color patterns.

Another great activity for Wilbraham kids is to have them put colored puff balls inside the same color of egg. For safety, make sure the puff balls aren’t a choking hazard.
